Popeye from the Archives: My First Glimpse

This was my first glimpse of Popeye. My thought was he was so adorable that he wouldn't have any trouble finding a home. It wasn't until later that I learned he was paralyzed and that it might be be as easy for him as I had thought.

Popeye from the Archives: Packaged in Taiwan

This is a very early picture taken of Popeye, back when he was still in Taiwan (where he was found already paralyzed as a stray.)

Popeye from the Archives - Popeye Steals Toy from Bandit

This always makes me crack up when I watch it.  Especially their expressions at the end of the video.

Popeye from the Archives - Sharing a Toy

Here's something we never see anymore.  Popeye sharing a toy (with Bandit).

Popeye from the Archives - Running

We would sometimes use a Bottoms-Up Rear Harness to keep Popeye's hind legs elevated so he could move like a regular dog.  This was while we were waiting for his new cart.  As you can see from the picture, not having the use of his 2 rear legs did not slow him down a bit.  I could never keep up with him.

Popeye from the Archives - Lots of Teeth

Popeye with Bandit. No dog would dare to get this close to him anymore.

Popeye from the Archives - 1st Wheelchair

This wheelchair came with Popeye. It was made by a vet in Taiwan.  It was put together nicely but the design was flawed, especially for Popeye's hind legs, which were incapable of bending at the knees.  It was extremely difficult to put him in the cart and when he was in there, his hind paws would drag along the ground, which is why they're bandaged for protection here in this picture. You can also see that his spine is elevated in the back rather, which isn't ideal.  What a long way from his current Doggon' Wheels!

Popeye from the Archives - Bandit Meets Popeye

Bandit was another foster puppy we had at the time.2 weeks prior, I saw him being surrendered at the animal shelter.  He had a broken leg. I picked him up as soon as my then-current foster dog had been adopted.  Days after we got him, we arranged for him to have surgery to repair his broken femur. You can see the red stitch line on his left back leg in this picture.

Bandit was an incredibly incredibly good-natured dog.  Really, the opposite of Popeye in temperament. They were a great match.  Bandit was Popeye's first friend here.

Popeye from the Archives - Strollin'

Before Popeye got his new wheelchair, I used to walk him around the neighborhood in a baby stroller.

Popeye From the Archives - Car Ride Home

I've been going through old photos and videos of Popeye over the years. He came to us in 2008, almost exactly 4 years.  I think they're worth a second look so I'll be posting them here on a daily basis.  Hope you enjoy rewatching Popeye grow.

This is Popeye just a couple of hours after he arrived from Taiwan, where he had been rescued off the streets.  He had been flown to SFO, where I picked him up. It was a looooong drive home (with lots of wrong turns), but he was so patient and quiet the whole time.  Man how he fooled me.
